Why We Do What We Do
BIG Spades League LLC was born from a simple but powerful idea: the card table is a place where culture lives, friendships form, and everybody belongs. Founded in New York City and built from the ground up, BIG Spades brings together players, creatives, professionals, and culture-shapers from every corner of the city.
What started as a love of the game grew into NYC's most community-driven Spades league — with weekly virtual lessons, monthly in-person game nights across the boroughs, private event bookings, and a summer tournament that keeps getting bigger.

While BIG Spades League LLC officially launched in November 2023, our commitment to teaching, building community, and hosting unforgettable Spades experiences began long before that. Since 2016, we've been introducing new players to the game, organizing tournaments, and creating spaces where people can connect through the culture of Spades.
Since the league's launch, we've proudly hosted 15+ consecutive monthly events across all five New York City boroughs—and we're just getting started. The BIG Spades League Summer 2026 Tournament marks our biggest and most exciting event yet, bringing together players from across the city and beyond for an unforgettable celebration of competition, culture, and community.

Rule Scenarios
What Happens When…
Each scenario below is a real situation that comes up at the table. Videos will be added to walk through each one — use this as your production guide.

You can't follow suit — can you play a spade?
Yes. When you have no cards in the led suit, you can play any card, including a spade (trump). However, you are never required to trump — you can play off-suit too if you choose.

Can spades be led on the first trick?
No — spades cannot be led until they have been "broken" (i.e., someone has played a spade because they couldn't follow suit). Exception: if a player holds only spades, they may lead one.

My partner bid Nil but just took a trick — what happens?
The Nil bid is busted. Your team immediately loses 100 points for the failed Nil. Play continues — the tricks your partner takes still count toward the team's overall bid total.

Someone plays out of turn — what's the ruling?
The card played out of turn becomes an exposed card. The opposing team may require it to be played at the first legal opportunity or accept it as played. The league host makes the final call.

Absolutely not! Our weekly Wednesday virtual lessons are specifically designed for complete beginners. We'll teach you everything from scratch — card order, bidding, strategy — in a shame-free, judgment-free environment. Show up curious and leave with a hand to play.

Play at official BIG Spades tables at any game night to earn season points. Points determine your placement and seeding for the Summer Tournament. Games are played to 300 points (500 for the championship). Each book over your bid counts as +1 point. Accumulate 10 sandbags and you lose 100 points — so bid smart! Points carry through the tournament and post-tournament pick-up games, then reset on January 1, 2027.
